The Bachelor in Prosthetics and Orthotics (B.P.O.) is a 4 and ½ years undergraduate professional programme (Degree Course) (including 6 months compulsory internship as per the applicable curriculum) designed to prepare healthcare professionals who assess, design, fabricate, fit, and maintain prosthetic and orthotic devices for individuals with physical disabilities and movement impairments.
The B.P.O. programme integrates basic medical sciences, engineering principles, biomechanics, material science, gait analysis, rehabilitation medicine, assistive technology, and clinical practice. Students receive extensive theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical training in patient assessment, device fabrication, alignment, fitting, rehabilitation, and follow-up care. The curriculum also includes interdisciplinary learning with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation professionals, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, and rehabilitation engineers.
Graduates of the B.P.O. programme play a vital role in restoring mobility, enhancing independence, improving quality of life, and promoting the social and vocational inclusion of persons with disabilities. They are trained to provide evidence-based prosthetic and orthotic interventions using both conventional and advanced technologies such as CAD/CAM systems, 3D scanning, 3D printing, and modern lightweight materials.
